Hello, I'm Philip Irwin.
I have more than twenty-five years' experience in primary education as a teacher, senior leader and headteacher. I continue to work in local schools, giving me an up-to-date understanding of the primary curriculum and the expectations children face in today's classrooms.
I offer one-to-one English and Maths tuition in children's homes in Market Harborough and the surrounding area. Individual tuition allows lessons to be tailored to each child, whether they need support to catch up, extra challenge, or simply a boost in confidence.
Throughout my career, I have found that children make the best progress when they feel comfortable, encouraged and understood. My aim is to build a positive relationship with each pupil, helping them to develop confidence as well as academic skills.

Every child is different, so no two programmes of tuition are ever the same. Most children I teach need support with English and/or Mathematics, but every lesson is planned around the individual child's needs. I have many years' experience of working with children with a wide range of abilities and additional learning needs, adapting my teaching to help every child learn with confidence and make good progress.
Our first meeting begins with an assessment to help me understand your child's strengths, areas for development and how I can best support him or her. If possible, it would be helpful if you could provide your child's most recent school report before or at our first meeting. The assessment is followed by a discussion with you about my findings and recommendations.
The initial assessment and consultation are free of charge, with no obligation to continue.
Lessons are normally one hour, once a week during term time, although other arrangements can often be made if needed.
I plan each lesson in response to your child's progress, adapting activities as confidence and understanding develop. With over 25 years of teaching experience across the primary age range, I can draw on a wide range of approaches to find those that work best for each individual.
I provide tuition in your home across Market Harborough and nearby villages.
To help your child get the most from each lesson, I ask that we work in a quiet room with a table or desk, free from distractions such as television, other people and pets. I'll provide everything else we need. (A cup of tea is always appreciated!)
Tuition costs £50 per hour in Market Harborough and the surrounding villages. The first visit, including an assessment and discussion with parents, is free of charge. If you live further afield, any additional costs will be discussed in advance.
I hold an Enhanced DBS certificate and subscribe to the DBS Update Service, which enables parents to be confident that my DBS status remains current. My DBS documentation is available for inspection on request.
